Raynham Fire Chief Warns of Potential Flooding, Power Outages with Upcoming Nor’easter

RAYNHAM — Chief James T. Januse is warning residents of the potential for flooding and power outages that may occur when a nor’easter makes its way to the region early Friday morning.

The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for Bristol, Plymouth and Norfolk counties. The storm has the potential to bring heavy rain, flooding and damaging winds that could cause power outages. There is also a possibility for the rain to turn to snow at points.

A flood watch will be in effect from Friday morning through Saturday morning. A high wind warning will also be in effect from 10 a.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.

The region could see more than three inches of rain between Friday morning and Saturday afternoon and wind gusts could reach up to 55 mph. Temperatures are expected to be between 34-44 degrees during that time.

“Ensuring the safety of our community is our number one priority with this upcoming storm,” Chief Januse said. “With the potential for high winds to knock down tree limbs, we are asking residents to stay off the roads during the storm. If you must drive, do not drive over any downed power lines if you come across them.”

BEFORE THE STORM

• Be sure to have batteries for flashlights and battery-powered lanterns to use in the event of a power outage. If you must use candles, keep them away from anything flammable and do not leave them unattended.
• Keep cell phones charged.
• If possible, move or secure any outside items that could get blown by heavy wind gusts, such as lawn furniture.
• Clear any storm drains of debris that are prone to flooding that may be near your house.

DURING THE STORM

• Stay off the roads and stay indoors, if possible.
• If power goes out during the storm, contact Taunton Municipal Lighting Plant (TMLP) to report an outage by calling 508-824-3111.
• To report a gas leak, contact Columbia Gas at their emergency line at 1-800-525-8222.
• If you have an emergency call 911. If you experience flooding in your home contact the Raynham Fire Department at 508-824-2713.  

AFTER THE STORM

• Please clear any debris from storm drains near your home to allow water to drain.
• Do not pump water from sump pumps into the road. The water can freeze and cause hazardous conditions if the temperature dips.
• Do not go near or drive over any downed power lines.
