Taunton Fire Department Battles Fatal House Fire

TAUNTON — Chief Timothy Bradshaw reports that the Taunton Fire Department responded to a fire late Tuesday night that resulted in the death of a person.

At approximately 11 p.m., firefighters responded to a report of a fire at a three-family house at 246 Washington St.

Upon arrival, heavy flames and smoke were coming from the top floor of the three-story home. Four Taunton Fire engines and a ladder truck responded and quickly knocked the fire down.

During firefighting efforts, the body of an adult was discovered inside the home. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the victim is being withheld and will be released by the Bristol County District Attorney’s office after formal identification by the medical examiner and next of kin notification.

Eight residents were able to safely escape from the home. Due to the significant damage to the house, the residents have been displaced. They are being assisted by the Red Cross and Taunton Emergency Management Agency.

No other injuries were reported.

The incident is under investigation by the Taunton Fire and Police departments and State Police assigned to both the Office of the State Fire Marshal and to the Bristol County District Attorney. The fire is believed to have originated on the third floor and a cause has not been determined at this time.

Further information will be provided as it becomes available.
