Gloucester Firefighters Battle House Fire on Granite Street

GLOUCESTER — Chief Eric Smith reports that the Gloucester Fire Department battled a fire in a two-family dwelling on Saturday evening.

Firefighters responded at 5 p.m. after receiving a 911 call from tenants at 25 Granite St. reporting smoke coming from one of the two apartments. Upon arrival, crews found smoke coming from the third floor of the three-story wood frame building. The residents reported that everyone was out of the house when crews arrived.

The first arriving crews stretched a hose line through the building, and crews used thermal imaging cameras to locate the fire in a bedroom on the third floor. 

Pets, including a rabbit, were rescued from the building.

Firefighters knocked the fire down after about 15 minutes and crews remained on scene for about an hour for overhauling and ventilation. 

Fast-acting fire crews were able to contain the fire damage to the single originating bedroom on the third floor, though there was heat, smoke and water damage on much of the third floor.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Gloucester Fire Department, but a preliminary investigation indicates that the fire is not suspicious. Chief Smith estimates $50,000 in damages to the structure. 

The home did not have any working smoke detectors.

The American Red Cross was on scene Saturday evening assisting the two families displaced by the fire. They will not be able to return until the building is deemed safe for habitation.
