Rochester Boy Honored for Reporting City Hall Annex Fire

ROCHESTER — Mayor Caroline McCarley and City Manager Daniel Fitzpatrick are pleased to announce that officials honored a young resident Tuesday night for reporting a fire that broke out inside the City Hall Annex last spring.

Logan Putnam, a 9-year-old fourth grade student at Chamberlain Street School, was recognized at Tuesday night’s City Council meeting by the members of the council, Mayor McCarley and representatives from CMGC, which had been contracted to complete renovation on the annex.  

During the meeting, Mayor McCarley presented Putnam with a certificate of appreciation from the city, and CMGC awarded him a $5,000 scholarship to be used for his post-secondary education.

On Friday, May 26, Rochester firefighters responded to the City Hall Annex after receiving a report from Putnam that the building was burning. Upon arrival, firefighters located an active fire burning in the ceiling above the second floor of the building and made an aggressive attack that extinguished the flames and prevented potentially catastrophic damage to the building. 

“Anyone who has been inside the City Hall Annex since it opened knows that it’s a tremendous resource for the city, and Logan’s quick thinking helped save it from what would have been a disastrous fire,” Mayor McCarley said. “We are all so grateful for his actions, and I’m pleased to be able to recognize him and thank him personally.”

The City Hall Annex, which in the past had served as a fire station and later a police station, opened in August following a restoration effort that was approximately a decade in the making. It now houses the Office of Economic and Community Development, Department of Building, Zoning and Licensing Services and the Planning Department.
