Avon Middle-High School Welcomes Guest Speaker
AVON — Principal Dawn Stockwell is pleased to announce that the Avon Coalition for Every Student (ACES) sponsored a visit by nationally known speaker Dr. Mykee Fowlin to Avon Middle-High School last week.
Fowlin first caught the attention of ACES students at last year’s Eastern States Youth to Youth Conference. Fowlin uses humor, performance art, poetry, storytelling, psychology and theatrical monologues — based on his personal journey — to create a one man performance piece entitled “You Don’t Know Me Until You Know Me.”
A professionally trained actor and psychologist, Fowlin’s mission is to create an atmosphere of worldwide inclusion by exposing the beauty within all people.
After hearing his powerful message, ACES students launched an effort to have Fowlin visit the school. On Jan. 9, the entire student body gathered to hear him speak about the importance of exposing their true selves to the world and celebrating one another’s differences in order to create a more inclusive environment for everyone.
His visit was spearheaded by ACES and was made possible by a generous award from the Norfolk District Attorney Michael W. Morrissey’s office. The district earned the award in October after high school students achieved a perfect score in the District Attorney’s Team Rival challenge, which raises awareness about substance abuse prevention.
“Dr. Fowlin’s message is an important one for our students to hear,” Principal Stockwell said. “I am so grateful for the dedication that students in ACES showed in spearheading the effort to bring him to our school.”
