Melrose Winthrop School Holds Food Drive, Makes Donation to A Servant’s Heart Food Pantry

MELROSE — Principal John Maynard is pleased to announce that Winthrop Elementary School students held a food drive last month to benefit Our Servant’s Heart Food Pantry.
Second grade students in Jeanne Orlofski’s class wanted to get into the spirit of giving during the holidays, so under the direction of Orlofski and parents Claudia Dussault and Eileen Moise, they set up a food drive and encouraged their friends and peers to make donations.
“The Winthrop School community as a whole is filled with generosity, so I wanted to find an activity that would instill this virtue in students,” Orlofski said. “Our parents did a great job coming up with this community service activity and students were happy to be able to help others through the drive.”
From Dec. 14-21, students continuously brought in a range of items — enough to fill up two large boxes and several bags — which were given to A Servant’s Heart at the end of the week. Donated items include canned goods and non-perishable foods like pasta and peanut butter, along with other items like shampoo and laundry detergent.
Students also crafted holiday cards for volunteers at the pantry, which were delivered with the food donation.
“It felt good to help people in need,” said second grade student Anneliese Banghart.
“I have done this before, and it feels good to give things to others,” added second grade student Madison Ogiba.
