Reading Police and Fire Respond to Gas Outage in Town

National Grid Completes Repairs to Blocked Main, Begins Restoring Service to Residents

READING — Fire Chief/Emergency Management Director Gregory Burns and Deputy Police Chief David Clark report that National Grid has completed repairing a blocked gas main that caused an outage to a section of town last night.

Around 8 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 4, National Grid received several reports of gas outages in the area of Charles Street.

Reading Fire and Police, along with National Grid crews arrived on scene and began working to identify the issue. The affected area is on Charles Street, near Timberneck Drive and surrounding side streets.

As a precaution, crews went door-to-door and manually shut off gas at the 78 homes on the street experiencing the outage.

By 10:30 a.m. on Jan. 5, National Grid had completed repairs to a blocked gas main and began turning on service to residents. Crews will be going back to all 78 homes to individually restore service. They estimate this process will take between three and four hours.

The Reading Fire Department would like to remind residents to clear their air intake and exhaust pipes for all heating appliances.
