Bedford Police and Fire Departments Respond to Car Into Building

BEDFORD — Police Chief Robert Bongiorno and Fire Chief David Grunes report that the Bedford Police and Fire Departments responded to an incident where a motor vehicle crashed into a building this morning.

At approximately 8:20 a.m., Bedford Police and Fire were dispatched to the Bedford Market Place on Great Road for a report of a car into a building. Upon arrival, first responders observed that a 2014 Honda CRV had crashed into an unoccupied storefront between Comella’s and barre3 Bedford, damaging the door frame and some of the brick work.

Firefighters had to use hydraulic rescue tools to extract the operator of the vehicle, a 61-year-old Bedford woman. She was transported to Lahey Hospital and Medical Center with serious injuries.

After an initial investigation, officials determined that before crashing into the building, the vehicle had traveled approximately 650 feet, starting at the Whole Foods at the opposite side of the plaza and then moving across the parking lot and over a medium, striking a steel bench and a parked car.

Investigators believe that the operator may have suffered a medical emergency prior to the crash. Her vehicle sustained substantial front end damage and was towed from the scene.

Following the crash, the building inspector was called to evaluate for structural damage and later deemed it safe.

No other injuries were reported. This incident remains under active investigation by the Bedford Police Department.
