Cause of 2-Alarm House Fire Remains Under Investigation by Taunton Fire Department

TAUNTON – Chief Timothy Bradshaw reports that the Taunton Fire Department is continuing to investigate the cause of a two-alarm blaze that displaced six residents of a home late Christmas night.

A Taunton Fire investigator has determined that the origin of the fire was on the third floor of the multi-family home, located at 27 Second St. The area is an unfinished attic space that is part of the second floor apartment. The apartment was vacant at the time of the fire.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined and the fire department is continuing to investigate today.

Residents living in the first floor apartment and rear apartment have been displaced. They were assisted by the Taunton Emergency Management Agency and the American Red Cross last night with finding a place to stay.

The fire was contained to the third floor and caused approximately $50,000 in damage. It remains unclear when the residents would be able to move back into their home.

Firefighters responded to the house at approximately 10:54 p.m. Monday after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting a fire on the third floor. Taunton firefighters quickly responded and found heavy flames coming out of the top floor windows.

A second-alarm was called for due to the extent of the fire, the size of the home and weather conditions. The flames were knocked down and residents were able to escape to safety. There were no injuries reported.

Electricity to the building was shut off due to water damage. A restoration company has been hired to make the house safe for the residents to return home.
