Winthrop Department of Public Works Repair Repairing Water Main Break
WINTHROP — Town Manager Terence Delehanty and Director of Public Works Steven R. Calla report that the Town of Winthrop is overseeing repairs and standing by to recharge the main and restore water service to all affected homes after a work crew damaged a water main today.
Earlier this afternoon, a contractor working for the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Rereation to replace an aged water main on Winthrop Shore Drive was removing a section of old pipe when the workers apparently pulled out a section that was still attached to the live 16 inch water main by an unknown cross connection from previous work.
Water service was temporarily lost from Sturgis Street to Beacon Street, and water pressure was affected on Water Tower Hill. Water service was redirected from Shirley Street, and all homes were expected to have service fully restored by 7 p.m. Thursday.
Winthrop Shore Drive between Sturgis and Beacon will be closed through rush hour on Thursday, but are expected to re-open in the evening.
There is no affect on water quality, and no boil water order was issued.
