NBC Boston Meteorologist Teaches Rockland Fifth Graders About Weather

ROCKLAND — Principal Elizabeth Bohn is pleased to announce that Emmy award-winning NBC Boston meteorologist Chris Gloninger visited the Rogers Middle School in Rockland, last week.
On Nov. 8, Gloninger spoke to fifth graders as part of the students’ ongoing lessons about weather.
“Mr. Gloninger’s visit was the culminating activity of our fifth grade unit on weather,” Bohn said. “This is the sixth year in a row that we’ve had a local meteorologist come teach our students. It’s a great opportunity to have an up close learning experience.”
During his presentation, Gloninger spoke about his recent trips to Florida and Texas, where he covered Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, which devastated large portions of the states.
He showed photos that he took and also discussed what caused the hurricanes, the damage done and the clean-up still to come.
Gloninger also spoke about the education needed to pursue a career as a meteorologist.
After the presentation inside the auditorium, he took the students outside to show them the Weather Warrior sports utility vehicle, owned by the news station. The vehicle is equipped with all the tools necessary to serve as a mobile weather station.
“Our students especially enjoyed being able to see first-hand the Weather Warrior tools used to predict the weather in our area,” said fifth grade science teacher Sue Lonergan, who coordinated the event. “We hope Mr. Gloninger’s visit builds a continuing interest in weather and science in the future for our students.”
