City of Rochester Expects to Conduct Keno Ballot Recount

ROCHESTER — City Manager Daniel Fitzpatrick announces that the City Clerk’s office expects to conduct recount of the ballots cast on the Keno question at a special City Council meeting next week.

Pursuant to New Hampshire state law, which mandates that a recount be held within 15 days of the election if 25 registered voters petition for one, the city tentatively plans to conduct a recount at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 22, in the City Council Chambers. State Rep. Matthew Scruton, a Rochester resident, has paid the required $25 fee.

“Above all, we are committed to ensuring that the ballots were counted correctly and that the will of Rochester’s voters — regardless of the margin — is respected,” City Manager Fitzpatrick said. “We are deferring to the state law on recounts, but we expect that one will be conducted and that we’ll know for certain whether or not the ballot question passed.” 

The ballot question, which if successful would allow Keno sales in state licensed pouring establishments, passed by one vote — 1,036-1,035 — on Nov. 7. The city has so far received 13 written requests for a recount, and is anticipating receiving a petition signed by enough voters to require a recount.
