Hull Public Schools Completes Copper/Lead Remediation in Drinking Fixtures

HULL — Superintendent Michael Devine reports that Hull Public Schools has completed copper and lead remediation on several drinking fixtures after elevated levels were found in the district’s three buildings.

Nine faucets, eight drinking fountains, and two kitchen dish-washing fixtures have been replaced throughout Hull High School, Memorial Middle School and Jacobs Elementary School after testing revealed levels of lead and copper that were higher than the state’s action levels.

In the fall of 2016, Hull Public Schools received a state School Drinking Water Assistance Program grant to test fixtures in the district used for drinking water. The 19 fixtures that came back above the action level were immediately shut off and the district began the process of replacing them.

Earlier this month, the process was completed and after retesting the fixtures, all came back well below the action levels. Any fixtures that were not initially tested are noted as “hand washing only” stations.

Hull Public Schools has taken steps to permanently reduce or eliminate the potential exposure to copper and lead in drinking water, and has worked closely with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection to address the issue long term and protect students, teachers and staff.

“The safety and quality of the water we use for drinking and dish washing is of the utmost importance to Hull Public Schools,” Superintendent Devine said. “We will continue to monitor all fixtures and will work with the DEP to prevent action levels from rising in the future.”
