A Veterans Day Message from Massachusetts Veterans’ Service Officers
A Veterans Day Message from Jeffrey A. Chunglo, President of the Massachusetts Veteran’s Service Officers Inc.
With the start of the Civil War in 1861, our legislators enacted Massachusetts General Law Chapter 115, establishing benefits and services for veterans and their dependents, as well as establishing the Department of Veterans Services. This law requires that all 351 municipalities throughout the Commonwealth be serviced by a Veterans’ Service Officer.
Currently, Massachusetts is the only state in the nation that provides substantial benefits and services to our nation’s veterans and their dependents.
Our Veterans’ Service Officers have ensured that veterans from all eras and generations have been able to receive the support services needed, as a token of gratitude for their sacrifices while serving our nation.
As Veterans Day approaches, we ask all residents of the Commonwealth to recognize the service and sacrifices of the men and women who have served, and continue to serve, this great nation. We honor our Gold Star families for paying the ultimate price for our freedom, and we stand firm in supporting our Blue Star families awaiting the safe return of their loved ones.
Over time, we have seen our national military observances lose their meaning. In many cases, our military observances have become a shopping holiday or another long weekend. On Veterans Day, our Veterans’ Service Officers will be conducting ceremonies across the state. We urge you to attend a ceremony near your home. On behalf of all Veterans’ Service Officers, please help us properly honor and acknowledge the men and women who have proudly volunteered to serve our nation and defend our liberties.
