GLOUCESTER — Chief Eric Smith reports that the Gloucester Fire Department quickly extinguished a fire that broke out in the walls of a home on Beach Street early Tuesday morning.

At approximately 1:56 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to 11 Beach St. for a report of a building fire.  Engine 1, Rescue 1 and Ladder 1 responded. Upon arrival, first responders located a small fire burning within a wall of the home.

Firefighters determined the fire had not spread beyond its point of origin, and worked quickly to open the walls and extinguish the flames.

“This is a great example of how early detection can make a huge difference in a fire’s impact,” Chief Smith said. “I’m proud of the efficient way our firefighters worked to extinguish this fire before it could cause serious damage to the home.”

Following a preliminary investigation, firefighters determined that the fire was likely caused by a cigarette that had been discarded in an ash tray near the wall where the fire originated.
