Newburyport Police Officer Honored by MADD for Enforcement Efforts

NEWBURYPORT — Marshal Mark Murray is pleased to announce that Newburyport Police Officer John Gavin was recognized by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) for his wide-ranging efforts to combat drunk driving in the city.
Officer Gavin leads the Newburyport Police Department’s traffic safety initiatives, which includes a unique emphasis on enforcing OUI laws. His worked earned him MADD’s 2016 OUI Enforcement Excellence award at the organization’s annual breakfast on Oct. 17.
Over the past year, Officer Gavin has arrested seven individuals for operating under the influence of liquor or drugs, and has also been an engaged participant in numerous statewide traffic safety mobilizations, including “Over the Limit, Under Arrest,” and “Click it or Ticket.”
Officer Gavin is a seven year veteran of the Newburyport Police Department whose performance reflects a strong commitment to enforcing both OUI laws and ensuring traffic safety and public safety as a whole. Last year, he led the department with 62 arrests and 276 traffic citations.
“This honor is extremely well-deserved,” Marshal Murray said. “Officer Gavin is deeply committed to keeping impaired drivers off of our streets, and has an innate understanding of the important role that traffic safety plays in the overall health and well-being of our community.”
Following his re-assignment to the evening shift in 2015, Officer Gavin quickly acclimated himself to OUI enforcement and ultimately tripled his number of alcohol-related arrests.
