Dedham Fire Department Announces Fire Prevention Month Events

DEDHAM — Fire Chief William F. Spillane and the Dedham Fire Department are pleased to announce the department’s programs for National Fire Safety Month in October.

The department has several fire safety initiatives scheduled, including an Open House and visits to every elementary school in town to teach children vital fire safety and fire prevention techniques.

Saturday, Oct. 14 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Open House, sponsored by Papa Gino’s, is aimed at teaching fire safety and prevention practices to families. Firefighters will demonstrate the “stop, drop, and roll” method, teach adults to plan escape routes out of their home, and how to safely crawl through a smoke-filled room.

The fire department will also hand out colorful safety brochures on smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, and fire prevention.

Papa Gino’s will provide free pizza and children’s fire safety coloring books.

As part of National Fire Safety Month, the Dedham Fire Department will also visit every elementary and preschool in town during the month of October to visit and education children.

Part of this effort includes a demonstration of firefighters’ equipment and protective gear. If children see firefighters in full gear at school, they should be more comfortable and less afraid if they see a firefighter in gear during an emergency.

Children will also be given a tour of the fire trucks and fire prevention activity books to take home.

The department expects to visit over 1,200 children during the month.

“October is a very important month for fire departments across the nation, and the members of the Dedham Fire Department look forward to working with kids every year to show them how to stay safe,” Chief Spillane said. “I encourage all families to stop by the open house event and engage their children in an honest and open dialog on fire safety.”
