Bedford Police and Fire Respond to Single-Car Crash

BEDFORD — Chief Robert Bongiorno and Chief David Grunes report that the Bedford Police and Fire Departments responded to a single-car crash this morning that left many residents without power.
At approximately 9:20 a.m. Bedford Police and Fire responded to the area of 25 Hartwell Road for a report of a downed utility pole.
Upon arrival, first responders observed a white Nissan sedan on its roof next to a downed utility pole. An initial investigation indicates that the vehicle, driven by a 22-year-old Connecticut man, was traveling eastbound on Hartwell Road when he struck the pole, causing the car to flip over onto its roof.
The male driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle. He was transported via ambulance to an area hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.
As a result of the crash, there were multiple small transformer fires nearby that caused power outages in the area. Hartwell Road remains closed between Independence Road and South Road while crews from Bedford Fire, Bedford DPW, Eversource, Comcast and Verizon evaluate damage and make repairs. It is unclear at this time how many homes are without power.
Concord Firefighters provided station coverage while Bedford Fire responded to this incident.
Bedford Police and Fire remind residents to never go near any downed wires, as they could potentially be energized with a high voltage of electricity. The cause of this crash remains under active investigation by the Bedford Police Department.
