Rockland Students And Families Raise Money To Support Those Impacted By Hurricane Harvey

ROCKLAND — Principal Beth Bohn is pleased to announce that Rogers Middle School students have conducted numerous outreach efforts in order to raise money for Houston schools as they work to recover from the impacts of Hurricane Harvey.
In total, students raised $1,800 for schools in need following the devastating impacts of Hurricane Harvey. This was completed through the combined efforts of students, teachers and families throughout the Rockland Schools.
Sixth grade teacher Nancy Grattan, seeing the aftermath of the storm, recalled a quote from Fred Rogers, who noted that whenever there is something scary or unfortunate in the news you should, “look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.”
It was in that spirit that she launched the fundraising effort at Rogers, working with Sue Lonergan, who sent members of the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) to Open House nights at Rogers, Esten Elementary and Memorial Park Elementary to collect donations from parents and families at those schools.
Rogers also hosted a Student Hat Day and Staff Jeans Day to support the Harvey relief effort. The NJHS also established a partnership with the Rockland Knights of Columbus, which is working with the Knights in Houston, while Jefferson Elementary School has adopted a sister school in Houston and will be sending items from a wish list.
“The people of Texas face a long road to recovery, and our community showed that it’s eager to help ease that recovery process as much as possible,” Principal Bohn said. “I am proud of the work our students and staff did to stand in solidarity with Houston.”
Throughout their fundraising drive, students used the motto, “Lone Star State, you are not alone.”
“This was a truly collaborative effort that reflects the district’s dedication to community service,” Superintendent Cron said.
