Greater Lawrence Technical School Students Participate in Spicket River Cleanup Event
ANDOVER — Superintendent John Lavoie is pleased to announce that Greater Lawrence Technical School students helped beautify the Spicket River over the weekend by cleaning up areas along the shoreline.
On Saturday, Sept. 16, students and teachers spent the day at the river as part of GLTS’ Spicket River Cleanup with Groundwork Lawrence, a nonprofit organization that works to bring about sustainable changes for the environment. This is GLTS’ second year participating in the 16-year-old event and attendance more than doubled — moving from less than 15 students in 2016 to 31 in 2017.
Students who joined in the effort did so through GLTS’ Interact Club, the school’s extra-curricular organization focused on community service. Members work with the Lawrence Rotary Club to partake in activities and events that benefit the surrounding areas.
From 8 a.m. to noon, participants focused on clearing the area around the Hayden Schofield Playstead Park in Lawrence. In total, they disposed of approximately 50 bags bags of trash while also dragging out other large items like mattresses and planks of wood from broken furniture.
“I want to thank all of the students who participated,” said Interact Club Adviser Chris Cyr. “It’s always great to see kids giving back, and at the same time, students get to know their peers and form lasting bonds. Like a typical Reggie, they work hard and have fun and at the end of the day, remind us all that we are at a very special school with some wonderful people who really want to make a difference in life.”
