Town of Reading and Reading Police Department Warn Residents to Be Aware after Incidents of Scammers Posing as Town Employees in other Communities
READING — Police Chief Mark Segalla and Town Manager Robert W. LeLacheur, Jr. would like to remind residents to be careful when people come to their doors unexpectedly.
Two residents in Braintree recently reported men coming to their doors claiming to work for the Braintree Water and Sewer Department and asking to check the water lines in their homes. The suspect or suspects did not have any sort of identification, and thankfully, the residents did not allow the men inside. These types of incidents are not uncommon.
Although no such incidents have been reported in Reading, it has occurred in some Massachusetts communities and residents should be aware and cautious when strangers come to their door.
If residents are approached by someone claiming to be a town employee, Chief Segalla and Town Manager LeLacheur wish to remind residents that town employees will always carry town-issued identification. If residents have any doubt about whether or not a person is a genuine town employee, they are encouraged to call the Reading Police for verification.
“I urge all residents to be vigilant and cautious when someone knocks on your front door,” Chief Segalla said. “Always ask for ID, and when in doubt call the police. We are happy to assist, and you are never bothering us.”
Added Town Manager LeLacheur: “Even though we are not aware of this type of incident occurring in Reading, the fact that it has happened throughout Massachusetts in recent weeks gives us pause, and we hope all residents will heed our advice and stay safe.”
Residents can reach the Reading Police Department at 781-944-1212.
