Gloucester Firefighters Attend Respiratory Protection Training

GLOUCESTER — Chief Eric Smith is pleased to announce that two Gloucester firefighters attended an advanced training session at the Center for Domestic Preparedness (CDP) that will enable them to develop an enhanced respiratory protection program for their fellow firefighters.

Deputy Chief Gaetano “Tom” LoGrande and Capt. Phillip Harvey III attended the three-day course late last month at the CDP campus in Anniston, Alabama.

Deputy Chief LoGrande and Capt. Harvey underwent training that placed an emphasis on the standards that fire departments should adhere to regarding breathing devices and other safety equipment for firefighters. They will be the key personnel that write and develop a respiratory protection program that will allow the Gloucester Fire Department to meet all applicable standards related to using respiratory protection equipment.

“Firefighter safety is always our top priority, so having an in-depth understanding of the most current best practices will help us keep our first responders safe when they are on scene,” Chief Smith said. “This program will help us generate and update our own policies and procedures in order to best prepare and protect our firefighters.”

The training program, including the two firefighters’ travel expenses, was fully funded by the federal government.
