Chelmsford Police Department Investigating Theft of Unmarked Police Cruiser, Loaded Police Shotgun, from Detective’s Home

CHELMSFORD — Police Chief James M. Spinney reports that the Chelmsford Police Department is actively and aggressively investigating the overnight theft of an unmarked police cruiser and a civilian vehicle from the home of a Chelmsford police officer. The cruiser had a loaded police-issue shotgun inside the trunk.

Sometime overnight from Wednesday into Thursday, thieves broke into the garage of a Chelmsford police detective and stole several sets of keys from inside. The thieves then stole a 2011 Ford Taurus and a Saturn wagon from the detective’s driveway.

The Saturn was found a short distance away from the detective’s home, and police found the Taurus at approximately 9 a.m. Thursday on Bowden Street in Lowell, near the Lowell-Chelmsford border. However, the shotgun was not inside, and it is now the subject of an intensive police search.

The thieves also stole a pistol lockbox from the Taurus, but it was empty at the time.

Chelmsford and Lowell K-9 units have been dispatched to aid in the search.

“Locating this stolen police weapon is our top priority at this time,” Chief Spinney said.

If anyone has any information on this incident or knows the whereabouts of the shotgun, they are asked to contact the Chelmsford Police Department at 978-256-2521.
