Andover Announces Opening of Pomps Pond This Weekend

ANDOVER — The Town of Andover is pleased to announce that Pomps Pond will be open for business this weekend and encourages the community to come cool off by the water.

Pomps Pond, located at 147 Abbot St., will be officially open for the season from Saturday, June 17 to Sunday, August 20. During this time, the pond is open to Andover residents with a valid pass from 12-7 p.m.

Passes are available for purchase at Pomps Pond. In order to buy a pass, residents must have two valid forms of proof of residency, including a valid driver’s license and vehicle registration with an Andover address listed and vehicle present.

“We are proud of the many recreational areas that Andover has to offer, including Pomps Pond, which we are excited to open for the season on Saturday,” Andover Town Manager Andrew Flanagan said. “The pond is looking great, and we hope to see residents come out and enjoy the nice weather for opening weekend.”

To prepare for the 2017 Pomps Pond season, both the Town of Andover and the state have conducted tests over the last few weeks to ensure that the pond is safe for swimming. Test results from the town, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection all indicate that the pond is safe for residents to swim in.

Additionally, Massachusetts regulations require the town to test the water quality of the pond weekly throughout the season. This testing occurs at the Andover Water Treatment Plant Lab, which is certified for this work, and takes samples for testing from other communities as well.

“We remain proactive in conducting water testing early and often to ensure the water quality is safe for the public as we get ready for a successful season,” said Andover Public Health Director Thomas Carbone. “All of the tests have come out very good so far and we hope that residents will take advantage of this beautiful resource that our town has to offer.”

In addition to water testing, staff has been freshening up the facility, raking the beach and maintaining facilities to get ready for opening weekend.

“Opening weekend at Pomps Pond signifies that the summer season has officially started here in town, and we hope to see residents come out and enjoy the water,” said Andover Director of Community Services Joe Connelly.

Pomps Pond offers a sunbathing area, shaded picnic grounds, a children’s playground area, bathrooms, showers, a concession stand and numerous recreational activities.

Residents should note that swimming is only allowed when Pomps Pond is open for the season AND lifeguards are on duty. When the pond is closed, or in the off season, there is no swimming allowed.
