New Rochester City Manager’s Corner Explains N.H. Right to Know Law
ROCHESTER — City Manager Daniel Fitzpatrick is pleased to announce that a new episode of City Manager’s Corner, featuring an in-depth look at New Hampshire’s Right To Know Law, is online now for residents to watch.
In the episode, City Manager Fitzpatrick and City Attorney Terence O’Rourke discuss the Right to Know Law and provide insight into the types of government records that can and cannot be made public upon request.
O’Rourke explains that documents that are created in furtherance of the government’s work are public, like an e-mail on the status of the budget. However, information from employees’ individual personnel files are a type of record that the public does not have a right to.
“The Right to Know Law is something that is not always well understood by the general public,” City Manager Fitzpatrick said. “We strive to be transparent, so we want residents to understand that there is a large amount of public documents that they are entitled to access, and we also want them to have a sense of why some documents are not considered public.”
City Manager’s Corner, a video series in which City Manager Fitzpatrick and his staff discuss a variety of municipal topics, are released approximately every other month on the city’s video hub. The episode on the Right to Know Law is available here.
This program will be repeated many times on the City of Rochester Government Channel, Metrocast Cable Ch. 26. For the cable schedule click here.
