GLOUCESTER — Chief Eric Smith is pleased to report that the Gloucester Fire Department provided life-saving aid last Monday to a man who had suffered cardiac arrest.

Firefighters received a report Monday, April 24, at 7:59 p.m., of a man suffering from chest pains on Veterans Way. The 43-year-old victim told firefighters that the chest pains were severe and, after a brief examination, firefighters decided to transport the man to Beverly Hospital.

During transport, the man’s condition worsened significantly and he went into cardiac arrest. Paramedics treating him were able to revive him prior to arriving at the hospital.

“I commend all of the firefighters involved for their dedicated efforts,” Chief Smith said. “Their professionalism and care made a tremendous difference in this man’s life and the lives of his loved ones.”

Acting Fire Lt. John McCarthy, Firefighters/Paramedics Gary Lindberg, Anthony DellaCroce and Mick Ruiter responded to the call. The man was discharged from the hospital and returned home Wednesday.
