Rochester Fire Department Responds to First Motorcycle Crash of the Season

Rider Sustained Serious Injuries

ROCHESTER, N.H. — Fire Chief Norman Sanborn reports that the Rochester Fire Department, as well as the Rochester Police Department and Frisbie EMS, responded to a motorcycle crash on Monday afternoon, the first such crash of the spring season.

Rescuers responded Monday at 12:30 p.m. to Milton Road near the Rt. 202 Bypass for a reported motor vehicle crash involving a sport utility vehicle and a motorcycle.

The motorcycle operator, a 56-year-old Rochester woman, sustained serious injuries. She was taken by Life Flight of Maine to Maine Medical center in Portland.

The operator of the SUV, a 28-year-old Rochester woman, was not injured.

Rochester Police shut down that area of Milton Road and re-directed traffic while emergency personnel tended to the driver of the motorcycle and the accident was investigated.

An initial investigation by the Rochester Police Department indicated that the motorcycle, a 2002 Suzuki VL800, was traveling north on Milton Road when it was struck by a 2000 GMC Yukon. The driver of the GMC Yukon crossed the center line, apparently in an attempt to make a u-turn.

The Rochester Fire Department response was Engine 5, Rescue 1, and Chief 3.

This was the first serious motorcycle crash of the season. Chief Sanborn wishes to remind all motorists that, now that the weather has improved, everyone using the road needs to be aware and extra cautious of motorcyclists.

Chief Sanborn noted that this incident was also the first call utilizing Life Flight of Maine out of its new Sanford, Maine Station. The response was very rapid, and the new station will be a vital resource for the City of Rochester moving forward.
