Boxford Fire Department Responds to Two Serious Motor Vehicle Crashes over the Weekend

BOXFORD — Chief Brian Geiger reports that the Boxford Fire Department responded to two serious, back-to-back motor vehicle crashes on Saturday evening that killed one person and injured several others.

The chief also wishes to express his gratitude to neighboring fire departments, which provided significant mutual aid and coverage of the town during the evening hours. He also wishes to acknowledge the efforts of his firefighters, who performed their duties admirably under stressful and difficult circumstances.

First Incident.
On Saturday, April 8 at 9:55 p.m., firefighters, police officers, and EMS were dispatched to a reported multi-vehicle crash with injuries on I-95 near Exit 53.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a male driver of a BMW convertible in traumatic arrest and four other victims in two additional vehicles. A preliminary investigation indicates that the BMW was driving southbound on the highway when it crossed the median and struck a 2012 Acura MDX and 2009 Honda Civic.

The driver of the BMW, a 38-year-old Peabody man, was pronounced dead at a local hospital. The other victims were taken to area hospitals with a range of injuries that are not believed to be life threatening.

The Georgetown and Topsfield Fire Departments also responded to the scene along with Lyons Ambulance.

Second Incident.
Shortly after the first crash, at 11:20 p.m., Boxford Fire was dispatched again to I-95, just south of the first crash scene, which was still being processed and investigated by police.

Firefighters arrived within minutes to find a Toyota Yaris had crashed into the rear corner of a tractor-trailer truck and then spun into the nearby woods.

Firefighters used the Jaws of Life to extricate the driver, a woman in her 30s, who had sustained serious injuries that were considered to be life-threatening.

A medical helicopter was called to the scene, which airlifted the victim to a Boston hospital. There is currently no word on her condition.

The Georgetown, Groveland, and Topsfield Fire Departments covered the two Boxford fire stations during the incidents.

“This has been an incredibly challenging weekend for our small fire department, but our members performed their duties well, with tremendous support from our neighbors, as well as the support and well wishes of our residents, the Boxford Police Department, emergency communications dispatchers, and our Board of Selectmen,” Chief Geiger said. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of those involved in these two incidents.”
