Stoughton High School Hockey Player Honored for Sportsmanship by MIAA and Boston Bruins

STOUGHTON — Superintendent Marguerite Rizzi is pleased to announce that Stoughton High School senior and hockey captain Cameron Doherty received the Boston Bruins-Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) Sportsmanship Award.

Doherty, a defenseman, was honored on Tuesday night during an on-ice ceremony in the second intermission of the Bruins’ home game against the Tampa Bay Lightning at TD Garden. He was one of 34 high school honorees at the game — all of whom were given free tickets to the event and invited for a pre-game dinner in one of the arena’s luxury boxes.

“Cam has always represented Stoughton High in the classiest way,” Coach Dan Mark said. “I have never seen him retaliate or get a penalty in anger or react to anything that has happened on the ice. The best quality I have seen in Cam is the manner he treats the other players. He goes out of his way to praise his fellow teammates and always takes responsibility for anything and everything that happens on the ice and never blames anyone other than himself.”

As a captain, Doherty appeared in all 21 games for the Stoughton Black Knights this season and registered five assists. The team finished the season with a 7-12-2 record and won four of its last five games to close out the year.

For 15 years, the Bruins and the MIAA have teamed up to honor male and female high school hockey players from across the Commonwealth who best demonstrate leadership qualities on and off the ice. When selecting the winners for this award, a statewide committee of principals, superintendents and athletic directors looks for student-athletes who have:

• An exemplary record of complying, both in spirit and letter, with all league and MIAA rules and regulations during the season
• A demonstrated record of respectfully accepting the rulings of game officials
• A record of conduct on and off the ice that brings honor to one’s self, team, school and community
• A commitment to teamwork by providing all members with recognition of their talents
• A demonstrated respect for opponents before, during and after games

“Our entire district is extremely proud of Cam’s accomplishments throughout the season,” Superintendent Rizzi said. “He sets an example that all students should follow in their athletic and academic pursuits.”

In the fall, Doherty will be enrolled in the School of Engineering at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
