Hull Elementary School Participates In Literacy Week

HULL – Christine Cappadona, Principal of Lillian M. Jacobs Elementary School, is pleased to announce that students, teachers and staff participated in a fun and successful Literacy Week.

The event, which occurred from March 6-10, is held every year to coincide with Dr. Seuss’ birthday on March 2 and the school PTO’s book fair fundraiser.

Each morning, following the student announcements, everyone in the building dropped what they were doing to read for 10 minutes. The activity served as a reminder of the joys of reading.

To really get into the spirit of the week, teachers, staff and students were encouraged to dress up each day in honor of Dr. Seuss’ books:

Monday: “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish”–  dress in red and blue

Tuesday:  “Fox in Socks” — wear crazy socks

Wednesday: “Wacky Wednesday” — wear your pajamas

Thursday: “Oh, the Places You’ll Go” — dress as your favorite book characters (Principal Cappadona dressed as Matilda, Assistant Principal Kyle Shaw was Waldo, and teachers and staff came as Cat in the Hat, Thing 1, Thing 2 and Thing 3, The Three Bears, the Rainbow Fish and the mouse from “If you Give a Mouse a Cookie”).

Friday: “The Cat In The Hat” — put on your favorite hat

“Reading is such an important part of our curriculum and is an activity we want to students to partake in even when they’re out of the classroom, so this week allows us to really drive home that point,” Principal Cappadona said. “Students have enjoyed seeing their teachers and staff dressed up as some of their favorite characters and loved listening to stories they may not have heard before.”

Additionally, throughout the week, parents visited their children’s classrooms to read books, and Principal Cappadona and Assistant Principal Shaw made their way around the entire school to share stories. They read “Oh No, George!” By Chris Haughton, “King Calm: Mindful Gorilla in the City” by Susan Sweet and Brenda Miles and “My Mouth Is A Volcano” by Julia Cook.

Everyone — from secretaries, teachers, central staff and custodians — were invited to read one of their stories to children. Guest readers included Superintendent Kathleen Tyrell, Assistant Superintendent Judy Kuehn, Memorial Middle School Principal Anthony Hrivnak and middle school Assistant Principal Gregory Kelley, who read to the fifth grade students to familiarize them with the administrators at the middle school, where they will transition to next year.

New to this year’s schedule, 14 retired teachers came back to the school to read to students on Thursday.
