Hull Students Receive Boston Globe Scholastic Art and Writing Awards

HULL — High School Principal Michael Devine is pleased to announce that two students were recognized with Boston Globe Scholastic Art and Writing Awards.

The annual competition recognizes students for their work in arts and writing. Pieces could be entered in 17 art categories, 11 writing sections and a “future new” option that challenged the scope of the general art and writing categories. Students submitted their work in December.

A committee of visual and literary arts leaders judged submissions. Awards are broken down into three categories: Gold Key, Silver Key and Honorable Mention, and given to students whose work best exemplifies originality, technical skill and personal voice or vision. Winners were announced in late January.

In her first time entering the competition, senior Erin Shea earned a Gold Key for her poem, “Frayed Pages and an Aching Spine.” In the poem, Shea uses a book to personify the feelings of loss and being forgotten — a novel left on a shelf with dusty, frail pages that are no longer new and appealing.

“I wrote it a few years ago after losing someone and wrote the poem as part of the grieving process,” Shea explained.

Winning Gold Key writing and art is on display at the Boston Public Schools headquarters in Roxbury. Shea, along with all Gold and Silver Key winners, is invited to an awards ceremony at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston on March 11. Gold Key work is also being considered for national recognition in New York City. National medalists will be announced on March 14.

Additionally, senior Jillian Larsen earned honorable mention for her illustration/drawing, “Lyla Man,” a portrait she created of her friend.

“I’m extremely proud of both Erin and Jillian, along with all students who entered this competition,” Principal Devine said. “This is a great honor for Hull High School and we’re pleased to have our students’ work recognized, potentially at the national level.”
