“The Herren Project” Comes to Burlington High School Students, Parents

Chris Herren to Speak on Dangers of Drugs and Alcohol

BURLINGTON —  Superintendent Dr. Eric Conti is pleased to announce that Chris Herren, former NBA player turned public speaker, will talk to Burlington High School (BHS) students and parents about his recovery from a life-altering addiction to drugs and alcohol.

WHAT

BHS invites students and families to hear the story of Chris Herren, a basketball star whose story of recovery from addiction spurred the creation of two organizations and now inspires high school students to abstain from drugs and alcohol.

“Students of this age are at a critical turning point in their lives,” Superintendent Conti said. “I am pleased to bring in Chris to BHS to connect with our students and share a personal, real-world example of how addiction can affect a life.”

Herren was a rising basketball star from Fall River who briefly attended Boston College before his drug addiction caused him to be expelled from the team and university. Further failed drug tests and a drug-related arrest dashed his hopes of playing professionally for the NBA.

Following a near-death overdose from heroin, Herren has since beaten addiction and has been sober since 2008.

Herren founded The Herren Project, a nonprofit dedicated to providing treatment navigation and educational and mentoring programs to those touched by addiction. The organization also works to educate people of all ages on the dangers of substance abuse — one person, one family at a time.
