ASHLAND — Chief Craig Davis is pleased to report that the Ashland Police Department donated 28 bicycles to Bikes Not Bombs, a local nonprofit that repurposes unused or discarded bicycles for those in need around the world.

The bikes accumulated at the Ashland Police Department over the course of the past several years. Discarded bicycles are considered “found property,” which the department collects and stores for up to one year.

This is the first year Ashland Police have donated bicycles to Bikes Not Bombs.

“We are pleased to do our part and donate what we can as the holidays approach,” Chief Davis said. “I commend our officers for reaching out to this organization and coordinating the donation to benefit those who need help with transportation.”

About Bikes Not Bombs:

Bikes Not Bombs collects roughly 6,000 used bicycles and tons of used parts from supporters in the Greater Boston Area and New England. Most bikes are shipped overseas to economic development projects in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. The nonprofit also runs a Youth Program where teens learn bicycle safety and mechanics skills to earn a bike for themselves.
