GLOUCESTER — Chief Eric Smith reports that the Gloucester Fire Department extinguished a one-alarm house fire last night.

At approximately 11:40 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 11, firefighters responded to 1 Harbor Road on a report of an outside building fire.

Upon arrival, firefighters observed a two-story wood frame structure with fire showing on the covered porch and extending up the front side of the building. All occupants were confirmed to be out of the home prior to the department’s arrival.

Engine 1’s crew quickly extinguished the main body of fire, while Rescue 1 put out the flames that had extended to a second floor bedroom.

Due to the strong winds blowing throughout Gloucester, the quick knockdown prevented the fire from spreading further into the home. No one was injured. Firefighters cleared the scene just before 2 a.m.

The origin and cause of the fire is under investigation by the Gloucester Fire Department. However, Chief Smith believes the fire was caused by the careless disposal of smoking materials.

Firefighters estimate $25,000 in damage to the building. The home is currently uninhabitable.

“Firefighters made quick work of last night’s flames and prevented this fire from becoming a much more dire situation,” Chief Smith said. “I commend their efforts and am glad to report that this family is safe.”
