Newburyport Police Remind Residents of Downtown Skateboarding Restrictions

NEWBURYPORT — City Marshal Mark Murray and the Newburyport Police Department would like to remind residents of the restrictions on bicycles and skateboards in the city’s downtown business district.

Newburyport City Ordinance states that: no bicycles, mopeds, skateboards or roller skates will be allowed to be used on the business district sidewalks, which is the area bordered by High Street, State Street, Merrimac Street, and Green Street, including the Inn Street Mall and Market Square.

The Newburyport Police Department has recently received multiple reports of skateboarders in these restricted areas. Skateboarders, bicyclists and those who use mopeds or roller skates are advised that police officers will be enforcing the ordinance on city streets.

A first offense shall result in the confiscation of the bicycle, moped, skateboard, or roller skates by the police department for a period of two weeks. Each subsequent offense shall result in a fine of up to $20.

In addition, police are asking parents to speak to their children and encourage them to only skateboard or bike in permitted areas. The City of Newburyport has a designated skate park at the Rupert A. Nock Middle School to accommodate skateboarders.

“This ordinance serves to protect the safety and well-being of pedestrians, bicyclists and skateboarders alike,” Marshal Murray said. “We encourage outdoor activities in and around town, but please be conscious of safety and surroundings – both for you and those around you.”
