Whitman Police Arrest Man on Sexual Assault Charges
WHITMAN – Chief Scott Benton reports that the Whitman Police Department arrested a level three sex offender after he allegedly raped a 14-year-old girl in a local cemetery.
CHARLES P. LOVEJOY, AGE 31, OF LOWELL, was arrested and charged with:
- Aggravated Rape of a Child
- Indecent Assault and Battery on a Person 14 or Over
- Enticement of a Child for Sex Under the Age of 16
At approximately 1:30 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 17, a Whitman patrol officer performed a traffic stop on a car leaving St. James Cemetery on Harvard Street. The officer ran the vehicle’s license plate, which came back registered to LOVEJOY, who is a registered sex offender with a Level 3 status on active probation.
Through interviews, Whitman Police determined that LOVEJOY met his female victim online through the application, Kik. He then proceeded to pick the victim up from her residence in a neighboring town and drove to the cemetery, where he allegedly sexually assaulted her.
Whitman Police seized two cell phones from LOVEJOY, who was wearing a GPS monitoring device on his ankle and had no weapons on him at the time of his arrest.
LOVEJOY was arraigned in Brockton District Court yesterday morning, where he is now being held on $1 million cash bail. He is next scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 16.
“This was a terrible incident involving a dangerous predator and young victim,” Chief Benton said. “I encourage all parents to have honest and meaningful conversations with their children about the potential dangers of meeting people online and internet safety.”
