Groton Fire Department Battles Large Four-Alarm Structure and Brush Fire

GROTON — Fire Chief Steele McCurdy and Police Chief Donald Palma report that the Groton Fire Department quelled a four-alarm garage and brush fire earlier today.

At 1:57 p.m., the Groton Fire Department received a report of smoke in the area at 293 Old Dunstable Road.

Firefighters arrived on scene and found that a garage was completely ablaze and spreading to the attached two-story home. Approximately three acres of brush surrounding the property was also on fire.

Chief McCurdy immediately called in mutual aid, declaring four alarms to bring in additional manpower and tankers to assist with the establishment of a water supply to put the fire out. At the peak of the fire, there were approximately 60 firefighters on scene.

Mutual aid was provided by the Ayer, Shirley, Townsend, Pepperell, Dunstable, Westford, Lunenburg, Harvard, Ashby and Hollis, N.H. Fire Departments. The Chelmsford and Brookline, N.H. Fire Departments covered the Groton fire station.

It took approximately two hours for the fire to be brought under control. Firefighters are still currently on scene, and are expected to remain at the residence throughout the night.

Nobody was injured. The garage was completely destroyed and the home sustained serious damage. Two residents are displaced, but staying with friends.

The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation by the Groton Police Department and the State Fire Marshal’s Office. No determination has been made as to whether the fire began outside in the brush, or inside the garage.
