MHS Teacher Receives MaFLA New Teacher Commendation Award

MELROSE — Melrose High School Principal Marianne Farrell is pleased to announce that Global Language teacher Steven Malley received a New Teacher Commendation Award from the Massachusetts Foreign Language Association (MaFLA).

MaFLA is a nonprofit devoted to the mentoring, support and professional growth of new teachers (a full-time educator who began teaching foreign language within the past five years). The organization offers multiple opportunities for professional development, support, networking and collegiality through membership.

“On behalf of the entire staff at MHS, we congratulate Mr. Malley on this exciting achievement,” Principal Farrell said. “Mr. Malley is an exemplary example of an educator who goes above and beyond in his teaching practices to ensure the best possible student outcomes.”

Kimberly Talbot, chair of the Melrose Public Schools Global Language Department, nominated Malley in February. He will be honored during a ceremony on November 18 during the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages Annual Convention at the Boston Seaport Hotel.

“Steven has continued to distinguish himself in Melrose through his outstanding instructional practices, professionalism, and tireless energy that he dedicates to his students and colleagues,” Talbot said. “He maintains a classroom atmosphere that is conducive to learning and encourages student growth. We are so pleased that Steven was chosen to receive this prestigious and competitive award.”

The New Teacher Commendation recognizes educators for demonstrated excellence:

• Proficiency in the language(s) taught.
• Knowledge and application of current methodologies of foreign language teaching.
• Knowledge of the diverse learning styles of students.
• Successful communication skills with students and colleagues.
• A class atmosphere conducive to learning.
• Involvement in extra-curricular foreign language activities.
• Involvement in professional activities.
• Enthusiasm in his/her teaching and learning of foreign languages.

As a recipient of the award, Malley will receive a complimentary three-year membership to the MaFLA.

“I’m honored to have been nominated and selected for this award,” Malley said. “I hope to take full advantage of the variety of professional development opportunities that have been opened up to me through a membership with MaFLA.”
