Georgetown Fire Department Responds to Serious Motor Vehicle Crash on I-95

Mass Casualty Incident Declared, Highway Shut Down Sunday Afternoon

GEORGETOWN – Chief Fred Mitchell Jr. reports that the Georgetown Fire Department responded to a serious, two-car motor vehicle crash on Sunday afternoon that required the fire department to shut down Interstate 95.

Georgetown Fire responded at approximately 1:45 p.m. to Interstate 95 Southbound, just north of Exit 54. Upon arrival, firefighters noted that a Chevrolet sport utility vehicle had apparently crossed the median from the northbound to the soundbound lane and struck a Nissan sport utility vehicle, causing significant damage to both vehicles.

The driver of the Nissan, a woman in her 30s or 40s, had significant head and back trauma. She was transported by medical helicopter to Tufts Medical Center in Boston. Two more adults and four children were transported to Anna Jacques Hospital in Newburyport and Merrimac Valley Hospital in Haverhill with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.

Presented with several victims, Chief Mitchell, who was the incident commander at the scene, declared a Level One Mass Casualty Incident.

All southbound lanes of I-95 were closed for about 30 minutes. The highway was closed in both directions for about 15 minutes during helicopter operations.

Responding agencies included the Georgetown Police Department, Massachusetts State Police, Newbury Fire and Rescue (Newbury and Byfield stations), Rowley Fire, and Atlantic Ambulance.

The crash is under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police.
