morning.

KYLE NATHAN, AGE 23, OF PEMBROKE and JAMES SARNO, AGE 37, OF WEYMOUTH were arrested this afternoon after Chelmsford Police, the Massachusetts State Police, and the Danvers and Middlesex K-9 units conducted a search of the area surrounding the bank.

At approximately 10:30 a.m., NATHAN and SARNO arrived via taxi at Stop & Shop, 299 Chelmsford St. Once inside the store, NATHAN allegedly approached the Citizen’s Bank demanding money. He reached over the counter and took an undetermined amount of cash and then fled the scene with SARNO. No weapon was shown and no one was harmed in the incident.

NATHAN was apprehended by Lowell Police at the Charles A. Gallagher Transit Terminal, 145 Thorndike Street. He is charged with Unarmed Robbery.

After fleeing Citizen’s Bank, SARNO attempted to steal a woman’s car in the Market Basket parking lot across the street from the bank. The woman was able to get away and police located SARNO hiding in a thick marshy area between Route 3 and the Westlands neighborhood in Chelmsford.

SARNO will be charged with unarmed robbery.

“I am proud of the diligent police work that led to the quick apprehension of both suspects involved in this case,” Chief Spinney said. “I would like to thank our law enforcement partners for their assistance in the search today, we could not have done it without their help.”

The FBI is also investigating the robbery, as NATHAN is believed to be involved in related incidents. Federal charges are likely.

NATHAN and SARNO are being held at the Chelmsford Police station pending arraignment at Lowell District Court.

These are allegations. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty.
