Melrose High School and Middle School Host Successful Career Fair

MELROSE — Superintendent Cyndy Taymore is pleased to announce that Melrose High School and the Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School hosted the largest student career fair in the history of Melrose with great success.

On March 3, from 6:30-8:30 p.m., approximately 500 students and parents gathered at the MVMMS cafeteria to learn more about career fields and the opportunities available to them before and after graduation.

Over 60 professionals from numerous industries were present, including biotech representatives, civil engineers, biologists, environmental engineers, software developers, elementary and preschool teachers, a school psychologist, Museum of Fine Arts event coordinator, labor union representative, New England Hair Academy representative, medical instrument engineers, a wedding photographer, marketing representatives from the Boston Celtics, a sportscaster from Channel 7, CrossFit trainers, realtors, equity traders, investors, accountants, a probation officer, state trooper, a district attorney, cancer researcher, cardiovascular nurse, dental hygienists, occupational therapist, fashion design school representative and more.

Each professional had a table set up and encouraged students to stop by, give out their resumes and ask questions. Eight 20-minute breakout sessions also took place in the MVMMS project rooms that were led by professionals in biology, psychology, broadcast journalism, health/fitness, engineering, business/investments and environmental studies. The sessions allowed attendees to obtain additional information from representatives in a smaller, personal setting. Jay Libby, a motivational speaker and job coach also spoke to students and parents about moving forward with their studies and careers after high school. The breakout sessions were very successful, with about 20 to 50 people attending each one.

Administrators received positive feedback from parents, staff, students and professionals, who all reported that it was a great opportunity for attendees to learn more career fields with which they were unfamiliar ​and to further explore areas of interest. Middle school students were given an early look into potential career paths and many juniors and seniors connected with professionals for future internship opportunities.

“We couldn’t have asked for a better event or turnout,” Superintendent Taymore said. “Our middle school students were given a firsthand look into the wide range of career opportunities available to them, while many of our students in high school capitalized on this event by securing an internship in a field of their choice. We look forward to offering and expanding the fair next year.”
