Groton Police and Fire Departments Investigating Fatal House Fire

GROTON — Police Chief Donald Palma Jr. and Fire Chief Steele McCurdy report that the police and fire departments are investigating a house fire that killed two people last night.

On Jan. 28, at approximately 11:30 p.m., Groton 911 dispatchers received multiple calls of a house fire on Whiley Road.

Police and firefighters arrived to the scene to find intense fire and heat. Vehicles in the driveway indicated that at least two people were in the home.

Fire crews from Pepperell, Westford, Ayer, Littleton and Dunstable also responded to assist Groton. During the course of extinguishing the blaze, firefighters determined that two people were deceased in the building.

“On behalf of the entire community, we offer our sincerest condolences to the family and friends of these two victims,” Chief McCurdy said.

The cause of the fire is being jointly investigated by the Groton Fire and Police Departments, along with the State Police assigned to the Office of the State Fire Marshal and the Office of Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan.

“This is an extremely tragic situation and we ask that the community respect the privacy of the family during this difficult time,” Chief Palma said. “We will continue to work with the fire department and our state partners to determine the cause of the fire.”

Identities of the victims will be released by the District Attorney’s Office once the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office completes formal identification and the next of kin have been notified.
