Bedford Police Grow Beards to Raise Money for Special Olympics

BEDFORD — Chief John Bryfonski is pleased to announce that members of the Bedford Police Department will be growing out their facial hair this month to raise money for the community’s Special Olympics team.

Officers who wish to participate in the event will donate $25 to grow out their beards. All money raised will benefit the Bedford Bobcats Special Olympic team. The Bedford Police Union has agreed to match the total donation, or bring the total amount to at least $500. Currently, 13 officers are participating.

The Bedford Bobcats is a year-round program that works with kids from fifth grade to young adulthood to participate in bowling, basketball, skiing, track and field and golf. Organizers also coordinate social activities to help families stay connected even if their child is not participating during a particular season.

Police started raising money for the Bobcats last year as a way to support a local organization. Officers donated $200 to the team to grow goatees and are hoping to increase their contribution every year.

“This fundraiser allows our officers to have fun while raising money for a great cause,” Chief Bryfonski said. “And with this extremely cold winter weather we’re currently experiencing, there’s no better time to have a little extra warmth on their faces.”
