Stoneham Police Arrest Man In Connection With Multiple Bank Robberies

STONEHAM – Chief James McIntyre reports that the Stoneham Police Department arrested a man today in connection with two November bank robberies in Stoneham and Quincy.

JOHN TRUGLIA, AGE 38, OF SAUGUS, is charged with unarmed robbery.

On Nov. 5, Stoneham Police responded to the Eastern Bank at 163 Main St. for a report of a robbery. Witnesses reported that a white male suspect had entered the bank, passed a note to one of the tellers and fled with an undetermined amount of money.

Police were able to use the bank’s surveillance footage to capture an image of the suspect and submitted the robbery note to the Massachusetts State Police Crime Laboratory to be processed for fingerprint and DNA evidence.

On Nov. 16, the South Shore Savings Bank, located at 138 Franklin St. in Quincy was also robbed. The Quincy Police Department reported that the suspect had the same physical description as the man involved in the Eastern Bank robbery.

Surveillance photos from the South Shore Savings Bank indicated that the suspect was the same person that robbed the Eastern Bank in Stoneham.

Investigators also compared the surveillance photos with a booking photo from a man who was arrested by the Saugus Police Department in 2010. They determined the suspect’s identity to be TRUGLIA and secured a warrant for his arrest.

Stoneham detectives arrested TRUGLIA today in connection with the two bank robberies. He will be held at the Stoneham Police Department pending his arraignment at Woburn District Court on Monday.

The investigation involved the Stoneham Police Department, Quincy Police Department, Chelsea Police Department, Saugus Police Department, the Essex County Sheriff’s Department and FBI Bank Robbery Task Force.  Additional charges may follow from the Quincy Police Department.

“This was a true collaborative effort between multiple departments and agencies,” Chief McIntyre said. “By sharing resources across community lines, we were able determine the identity of the suspect, locate him and bring justice to these cases.”
