Pepperell Police Officer Resigns After Incident in Station

PEPPERELL — Police Chief David Scott issues the following statement:

“In early September the Police Department became aware of an incident of alleged use of excessive force involving Sergeant Armando Herrera. The Police Department immediately initiated an internal investigation, and the sergeant was placed on administrative leave pending conclusion of the investigation. An independent professional was hired to conduct the investigation. Shortly after the Police Department concluded its internal investigation, Sergeant Herrera voluntarily resigned from the Police Department and is no longer an employee of the Town.

“The Middlesex District Attorney’s Office was notified, per our Police Department’s internal affairs policy.

“The District Attorney’s Office investigation remains open. As former Sergeant Herrera is no longer an employee of the Town, the Police Department cannot comment further on this matter. All future media inquiries regarding this matter should be directed to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office.

“In closing, I want to assure the citizens of Pepperell that this was an isolated incident. It was identified internally by the Police Department and investigated immediately with the high level of professionalism you expect from your Police Department. This has been a difficult time for our Department and its dedicated members and we thank you for your continued support for the police officers and the Department.”
