Maynard Fire Department Responds to Leaky Roof Under Construction

No Structural Damage

Residents Allowed to Return Home

Members of the media have requested information on this call from last evening.

MAYNARD —  Acting Fire Chief Peter Morrison reports that the Maynard Fire Department responded late yesterday afternoon to reports of a leaky roof that had damaged ceiling tiles and begin to leak into multiple units of a row of townhouses in town.

Maynard Police and Fire units responded to 3-10 Railroad Street at 5 p.m. Thursday. Firefighters quickly determined that the roof of the complex was under construction and unfinished and that the rain showers had caused water to seep under the roof and into the ceilings of some of the units, especially Unit 10.

The water leaked under the roof and saturated ceiling tiles on the top floor, causing them to leak into the units.

Investigators talked to the contractor and the building owner and determined that there was a legal permit to conduct roof construction on the row of homes. It appears that, given the high heat earlier this week, that the construction had not been finished before the rain came on Thursday. As a result, rainwater leaked into the homes.

The Maynard Building Inspector was also called to the scene. There was no structural damage, and residents were allowed to return to their homes.

“This is a case where a roof, that is under construction, leaked during a rainstorm. Thankfully, there is no structural damage to the building, and everyone was able to return home,” Acting Chief Morrison said. “We assisted residents at the scene and are advising them to maintain constant communication with the landlord.”

Maynard Fire Chief Anthony Stowers is at a National Fire Academy program this week, and Captain Morrison is serving as acting chief in his absence.
