Stoneham Police Lieutenant David Stefanelli Graduates from FBI Academy

STONEHAM — Chief James McIntyre is pleased to announce that Lt. David Stefanelli of the Stoneham Police Department graduated from the 260th session of the FBI National Academy.

The class took place at Quantico, Va. and consisted of 218 men and women from 47 states, 20 countries, five military organizations and three federal organizations. All were recognized for their accomplishments during a ceremony on June 12.

As a graduate, Lt. Stefanelli will join less than one percent of law enforcement officers in the world to attend and complete the program. Participation is granted through nomination and invitation only.

“I would like to personally congratulate Lt. Stefanelli for his accomplishments,” Chief McIntyre said. “Attending the FBI academy is a once in a lifetime opportunity and I know the training and leadership skills he garnered will greatly benefit this department and community.”

At the academy, Lt. Stefanelli received the Yellow Brick distinction for completing a 6.1 mile run through a hilly, wooded trail designed by the Marine Corps for their Officer Candidate School. Along the way, participants climbed over walls, ran through creeks, jumped through simulated windows, scaled rock faces with ropes, crawled under wires in muddy water, maneuvered across a cargo net and more.

He also earned the Blue Brick award for swimming more than 34 miles in a 50-meter pool, which represents the distance from the FBI headquarters in Washington, D.C. to Quantico. This translates to 1,088 laps over the course of a 10-week program.

In 1989, Lt. Stefanelli began his law enforcement career as a police officer for the University of Massachusetts Boston. Five years later, in 1994, he was promoted to sergeant. Then in 1998, he joined the Stoneham Police Department as a police officer and earned his sergeant rank in 2003, followed by lieutenant in 2012. He currently serves as the department’s patrol operations commander and grant writer.

Lt. Stefanelli holds a master’s degree in criminal justice from Western New England College, as well as a master’s certificate in dispute resolution and a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the University of Massachusetts Boston. For over 20 years, he’s resided in Stoneham with his wife and three children.
