WHAT

The business community is invited to attend the event to discuss business safety focused on recognizing, responding to, and minimizing incidents of concern and violence in the workplace.

“We are excited to be able to gather such a group of speakers and presenters for our inaugural Business Safety Summit,” said NEMLEC Foundation Director Sharon Crowley. “We hope to foster a dialog and help develop better working relationships between municipal police departments and their local businesses.”

“During emergency situations the municipal police department is the first to respond,” said NEMLEC Foundation Chairman Richard Raymond. “Strengthening the relationship between police and businesses will allow them to implement best practices and procedures to ensure safety for all.”

The Business Safety Summit’s program assembles a speaking program of corporate security, public relations, mental health, law enforcement, executive management, and healthcare professionals who will speak on best practices and training methods for effective prevention, response, and intervention of potential crises, including mental health issues and violence in the workplace.

The speakers will also share case studies from their experiences to demonstrate how to avoid potential risks to companies, outline the roles and responsibilities for each discipline of the Threat Management Team and provide attendees with a checklist for self-evaluation at their own company.

The program will also include a presentation by Shirley Singleton, the CEO of Edgewater Technology, the site of the Dec. 26, 2000 mass shooting by an employee that left seven coworkers dead.

“An established intervention and crisis management plan is a vital component for all businesses to include in their operations procedures,” said Keith Jones, Director of Corporate Security at Draper Labs. “This training will give both police and proprietors the steps to take to create a successful model for a safe working environment.”

Police chiefs and police officers from the 60-plus communities that make up NEMLEC throughout Middlesex and Essex counties will be in attendance to learn from the speakers and to meet business leaders from their communities.

“All employees should feel and be safe at work,” said District Attorney Marian Ryan. “That is why my office has developed the Middlesex District Attorney’s Workplace Safety Initiative, a unique public-private partnership to provide businesses training in best practices for intervention, prevention and response to unacceptable workplace behaviors, particularly bullying and violence.”
