Bedford Police Offer Youth Bicycle and Helmet Safety Event
BEDFORD – Chief Robert Bongiorno announces the Bedford Police Department, in conjunction with the Bedford Rotary Club, will host a bicycle and helmet safety event at the end of the month.
Residents are encouraged to stop by the Bedford Police Department’s parking lot, 2 Mudge Way, on Saturday, May 30 from 10 a.m. to noon.
Experts from Bedford’s Bikeway Source, a local group working to promote and educate the public on the benefits of staying active, will be on hand to answer questions, inspect bicycles for their proper operation and to make minor adjustments if required.
Free helmets will be given out to those in need, and cyclists can take a spin on the test track area that will be set up for the event.
The Bedford Rotary will supply the large quantity of helmets available to the community.
“Anything the Rotary can do to help promote safety, especially among our younger residents, is something we’re always happy to be a part of in the community,” said resident Ralph Hammond, the rotary member leading the effort. “We’re hoping this educational event will encourage bicyclists to always put safety first and wear a helmet whenever they’re on the road.”
Volunteers from the Bedford Rotary and the Bedford Friends of the Minuteman Bikeway will assist with proper helmet fitting.
“We are lucky to have the Bedford Rotary’s generation donations of not only helmets, but volunteers’ time, for our bicycle safety event,” Chief Bongiorno said. “Without their support this community venture would not be possible.”
Coupons for a free ice cream at Bedford Farms will be available on a first come, first serve basis.
