Armstrong Ambulance EMT’s Help Deliver Baby in Brighton on Sunday

ARLINGTON — Two Armstrong Ambulance Service Emergency Medical Technicians were having a fairly routine shift on Sunday when bystanders on Soldier’s Field Road in Brighton urgently flagged down their ambulance.

Initially, EMT Trevor O’Shea and EMT Eric Hackett thought there had been a car accident on the busy road, but they soon learned that there was something altogether different happening — a baby boy was being born, and he did not feel like waiting for his mother to get to the hospital before making his debut in the world.

“This was the last thing we were expecting as we were driving down the road, but we train to be prepared for anything,” said EMT O’Shea, who has worked for Armstrong Ambulance since September 2010.

“Too often, first responders encounter people during accidents or traumatic events,” said EMT Hackett, who has worked for Armstrong since November 2014. “It was very exciting to be part of a new life entering the world, and I was glad to play a small role. To be fair, mom did most of the work.”

The baby was born in his mother’s car, and the Armstrong crew cleared his airway, cut and clamped the umbilical cord, and tended to the mother.

The two were taken to Mt. Auburn Hospital, where mother and baby are said to be doing well.
